In this third and final article in this three-part series, I want to look at the future and how I believe things will continue to develop, the technology we can expect to see and how businesses can leverage these developments. The previous articles can be found here: Part 1, Part 2

A Shift in Perspective

I would like to open with a mind-shift statement. Many of the customers I have spoken to over the years, refer to ‘frontline workers’, which I believe creates an inaccurate perception of the importance of these employees. This is also an area where we see a large proportion of gig workers, as businesses often need to adapt quickly to trends that can influence the size of this workforce. When I order a taxi or a takeaway or visit a hardware shop to buy a tool, I am not usually dealing with the owner, a director or even anyone senior in that organisation, I am dealing with a frontline worker. To me, that worker should be the ambassador and representative of that organisation and be empowered to fully assist me with whatever tools they require.  They are not frontline workers; they are frontline ambassadors and the most important representatives of that organisation, as they are also the most visible.

Place yourself as a frontline ambassador, faced with a difficult question. As a business, you would like any question to be resolved as quickly as possible. Service desks call this first-line resolution, reflecting how empowered the service desk agents are. We often find staff at the frontline, especially temporary ones, being provided minimum tools and equipment because the business often doesn’t see the cost as justified for a temporary worker.  In the second article, I talked about a holistic approach, and in this, we need to look at the outcome desired by the business, not just the title or role of the individual who will be using an application or tool.

Using Technology to get the most out of Gig Workers

How do you utilise current and emerging technology to enable your gig workers and frontline ambassadors?

This is a question that sits at the intersection of innovation and practicality; touching on how businesses can harness technology to empower their most visible representatives.

One way is through the implementation of advanced mobile applications tailored to the specific needs of gig workers and frontline ambassadors. These applications can offer real-time access to important information, instant communication channels, and task management tools that ensure workers are well-informed and efficient.

For instance; delivery drivers can benefit from navigation apps that integrate real-time traffic updates and route optimisations with updated customer requirements. Customer service agents can use apps that provide immediate access to customer profiles and service histories linked to sentiment analysis tools and real-time translations; these later capabilities being dependent on the advances being made in AI.

Leveraging cloud-based solutions enables seamless access to resources and tools from any location; allowing gig workers the flexibility they need while ensuring they are always connected to the business infrastructure. This can include cloud storage for important documents, collaborative platforms for team projects, and training modules that can be accessed on-demand to upskill workers quickly.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning also play a crucial role. AI-powered chatbots can assist frontline ambassadors by providing instant answers to common queries, thus freeing up their time to handle more complex issues. Machine learning algorithms can analyse patterns in customer interactions and provide personalised recommendations to improve service quality and efficiency.

Additionally, wearable technology can be employed to enhance the safety and productivity of gig workers. Smartwatches and fitness trackers can monitor health metrics, while augmented reality headsets can offer hands-free access to instructions and guidelines, which is particularly useful in technical or maintenance roles.

From Gig Worker to Frontline Ambassador

In essence, by integrating current and emerging technologies, businesses can transform their gig workers and frontline ambassadors into highly capable and empowered representatives who can deliver exceptional service and adapt swiftly to changing demands.

Additionally, wearable technology can be employed to enhance the safety and productivity of gig workers. There are a multitude of wearable options including smart watches, rings, belts, necklaces and fitness trackers that can monitor health metrics, while augmented reality headsets can offer hands-free access to instructions and guidelines.

Enabling Organisational Success in the Gig Economy

In the first of this three-part series, we looked at how the gig economy has developed and how businesses can enable gig workers efficiently while balancing costs, security, and flexibility. The rapid evolution driven by technological advancements continues to create new opportunities for companies to streamline processes, enhance productivity, and offer greater flexibility to their workforce.

In the second article, we explored how technology is further driving the gig economy, examining significant advancements such as consumption-based models for on-demand training, digital employee experiences (DEX) tools, and AI-powered platforms for personalisation. By adopting these technologies, businesses can create a supportive and inclusive environment for gig workers, fostering both well-being and productivity.

As we conclude this series, it is evident that embracing a holistic approach, which includes streamlined purchasing solutions and automated delivery of both applications and hardware, can unlock unparalleled efficiency and support for the gig workforce. This integrated strategy ensures that gig workers receive the tools they need promptly and securely; fostering a productive and satisfied workforce.

Take the first step towards revolutionising your gig economy operations today. Evaluate the technological tools and strategies discussed in this series and consider how they can be implemented in your organisation to drive both cost savings and enhanced worker engagement. By doing so, you will not only improve the efficiency and effectiveness of your gig workforce, but also position your business for long-term success in an ever-evolving market.

Enablement Path for Your Gig Workforce

  1. Assessment and Planning: Begin with a thorough assessment of your current gig workforce and technological infrastructure. Identify areas where improvements can be made and plan a comprehensive strategy for integration.
  2. Technology Selection: Choose the right mix of technologies that align with your business goals and the needs of your gig workers. Consider AI, wearable technology, cloud-based solutions, and advanced mobile applications.
  3. Implementation: Work with experts to implement these technologies seamlessly into your operations. Ensure that training modules and support systems are in place to facilitate a smooth transition.
  4. Monitoring and Optimisation: Continuously monitor the performance of the implemented technologies and make necessary adjustments to optimise efficiency and effectiveness. Use advanced analytics to gain insights and drive continuous improvement.
  5. Support and Engagement: Foster an environment of support and engagement for your gig workers. Provide ongoing training, resources, and tools to ensure they remain productive, satisfied, and connected to your business.

By following this path, you can harness the full potential of the gig economy; creating a dynamic and resilient workforce that is ready to meet the challenges of the future.
