Commitment to achieving Net Zero
CDW Limited is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040.
Baseline Emissions Reporting
Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

As per the GHG Protocol and requirements of the PPN 06/21 the CDW Limited carbon footprint baseline and subsequent reduction plan have been developed using the financial consolidation approach. The period used for the baseline is 2020. However, due to the pandemic CDW wish to highlight 2020 is an abnormal year, with areas such as office energy consumption, business travel and commute to work impacted by the COVID19 pandemic. CDW has subsequently extrapolated Q1 data levels across the remaining 9 months to provide an accurate expected level of emissions across the baseline year. CDW’s CRP in line with PPN06/21 includes data in addition to that reported for the SECR, ensuring a stated position that fully reflects the requirements of the procurement policy note.

For the year 2020 (Baseline Year) CDW took the decision to extrapolate the Q1 data levels of 2020 across the remaining 9 months to provide an accurate expected level of emissions across the baseline year due to COVID19. For the reporting year 2021 the decision was made by CDW not to repeat this methodology and to report actual figures, that resulted in a significant reduction against 2020 with a subsequent increase observed for 2022 as business returns fully to normal operating levels underpinned by a hybrid working policy. During 2022 we have added 325 new coworkers equating to a 23% increase in coworker volumes. |

Emissions Reduction Targets
In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets:
- Implement certified ISO50001 by ESOS Phase 4 2027.
- CDW already secures 100% of electricity and natural gas consumed within our owned buildings from certified green energy sources. This approach will expand to include buildings where we are tenants by 2027.
- Reduce our plastic based pack-fill by 80% by 2030.
- Install electric charging points at our Peterborough and Rugby campuses by the end of 2023.
- Introduce fully electric site vehicles by 2023, and all fleet vehicles will be self-charging hybrid vehicles, as a minimum, by 2025. CDW is currently waiting for delivery of 45 hybrid vehicles equivalent to 59% of our current fleet.
- Increase hybrid working for office coworker reducing commute to work emissions by 60% by the end of 2023.
- Collaborate with our vendor and distributor partners to support their 0% non-recyclable packaging to landfill objective by 2040.
- By 2040 only use logistics suppliers who have >90% electric vehicles.
- Improve the granularity of unit specific carbon footprint and logistics carbon offset schemes in place.
Progress against these targets can be seen in the below:
Carbon Reduction Projects
Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives
The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2020 baseline. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes equate to 1247 tCO2e, a 44% reduction against the 2020 baseline and the measures will be in effect when performing the contract.
Current Energy Reduction Initiatives:
- Certifications and Accreditations:
- We maintain an accredited ISO 14001 Environmental Management system covering the entire scope of our business.
- The following sites that we own/reside hold BREEAM and/or have certified Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates:
- Peterborough – 70.8% (Excellent), REGO
- Rugby – 56% (Very Good), REGO
- One New Change London – 66% (Very Good), REGO
- Huntingdon - REGO
- Water – Peterborough currently has a rainwater harvesting solution in place, providing a 50,000-gallon tank for non-drinking water requirements.
- Waste in warehouse operations – All our sites have recycling in place with ongoing work with our partners to reduce the amount of non-recyclable packaging to landfill. We are also currently investigating ways to reduce our plastic based packfill.
- Removal of single use plastic cups and bottles across all CDW campuses including our National Distribution Centre and our Service Operations Centre
- CDW Peterborough Services Centre car park was refitted with lamppost fittings replaced with LED lights, generating a large saving in the usage of electricity.
- CDW Peterborough Services Centre internal light change (3 floors, 30,000sqft) moved to LED lights with daylight savings and sensors.
- Installation of Solar PV and Solar Hot Water along with daylight controls for lighting, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions
In the future we hope to implement further measures including, but not limited to:
- Certifications and Accreditations:
- We maintain an accredited ISO 14001 environmental management system
- Gain ISO50001 Energy Management System by 2027. CDW has already begun a gap analysis programme aimed at accelerating the certification programme
- Waste in operations:
- Work with our vendor and distribution partners to further reduce the volume of non-recyclable packaging to landfill to 0% by 2040
- Reduce our plastic based packfill by 80% by 2030
- Employee Commute – Following the pandemic we have reviewed our hybrid working models to increase hybrid working for our office coworkers this involves the following:
- Increase hybrid working for office coworkers reducing commute to work emissions by 60%. We have now introduced a hybrid working policy for coworkers, 3 days in office 2 days from home
- Monitor, report and offset with green energy, homeworker generated consumption by 2025
- Further incentivise our existing cycle to work scheme
- Our Fleet Vehicles and Business Travel – Where possible we are reducing the amount of business travel we undertake as we find a post pandemic ‘new normal’. In addition to this we are:
- Installing electric charging points at all CDW campus locations where permitted. In the current year (2023) this includes Peterborough and Rugby.
- We have procured 45 hybrid vehicles as part of our fleet renewal programme and are awaiting delivery. This volume of vehicles represents 59% of our fleet.
- Upstream and Downstream Transport & Distribution – Work with our supply chain, in the first instance, to improve the granularity and specific carbon footprint reporting of our transported products. This will enable more accurate data and a more targeted approach to managing and reducing this subset of scope 3 emissions.
- GGR Offsetting – Although every effort will be made to avoid, reduce, and substitute emissions in adherence with the Netzero principles and guidance we acknowledge that there will come a point where purchasing approved offsets will enable us to reach our Netzero target.
